THAT TIME JEREMY SAW FIREWORKS

“I still can’t believe you’re spending the Fourth of July with us.” Jamie holds out his beer to me, and I tip mine back against it. “Who would’ve thought? Jeremy Everett at a family-friendly fireworks celebration in Morse’s Line.”

I’m a little surprised, too, if I’m being honest. I spent last Fourth of July at a huge sorority party, where I managed to end up in what conventional wisdom would definitely call an orgy. Several Moo U hockey players of various genders were involved, but I never kiss and tell. “I thought it was time for something different this year,” I reply. I do not let myself look over at Aaron, who’s sitting on a camping chair on the other side of me, catching potato chips Lissie is throwing at him.

We’re sitting on a hill overlooking fields of farmland, surrounded by blankets and chairs and picnic baskets. The sun is just starting to set, and soon Morse’s Line will start their annual fireworks show. I’m not expecting much, to be honest. Aaron already warned me that the Morse’s Line fireworks budget this year sustained some cuts when they decided to restore an old railroad bridge.

Why I said I’d come here tonight, instead of heading to one of the hundreds of parties happening in Burlington right now, is still a mystery to me—except that every single time Aaron glances over at me and smiles, my dick twitches, and then my choice isn’t much of a mystery at all.

I shift in my chair and mentally order my cock to stand down. I may let it take over for me with decision-making fairly often, but it’s not going to get its way while we’re in the middle of a field surrounded by every single member of Aaron’s family.

“How’s work going, Aaron?” Frank, Aaron’s dad, sips at a soda and relaxes back into his chair. During moments like this with the Morins, it’s sometimes hard for me to believe that Frank and Aaron ever had the problems they did. He looks every bit the perfect father right now, studying Aaron with concern and pride.

Maybe there’s hope for my mother after all.

Then I remember the email she sent me last week and wince. It was one line. I will not tolerate this lack of communication. Email me immediately, Jeremy.

Then again, maybe not.

“It’s great,” Aaron says. “Well, I mean, it mostly is. Lots of tough cases right now.”

Ellie sighs from her seat next to Frank. “I heard your firm is working with the Turskys.”

“You heard about that?” Aaron asks anxiously.

“I saw Fran Tursky in the Quick Stop last week. She said if the legal route doesn’t work, they’re closing down at the end of this year. Such a shame. That family’s worked so hard their whole lives. They at least deserve to be able to make choices on their own terms.” She frowns and then brightens suddenly. “Are you going to be part of their case?”

Aaron looks uncomfortable. “I, uh, can’t say. Client confidentiality and all that.
